the story of Clarissa and Gabriel and their struggles with family and society was compelling. How family influenced their lives, their sense of duty and their beliefs really added to their story. Gabriel's acceptance of who Clarissa was and what she believed in really warmed my heart. He was not trying to change her, but wanted to support her. Clarissa's struggles with family responsibility, her beliefs and her growing affection for Gabriel. I loved their story and so want to read more to find out what happens after Gabriel leaves for California. Do they meet again? Do their finally have a life together? Can't wait.Product details

Banished Love Ramona Flightner 9780986050213 Books Reviews
Outspoken women were rarely seen or tolerated in society. Understanding the societal rules could make or break your reputation. When it came to a relationship, you couldn't look outside your own class without many people talking about you!
A very poignant story of a young woman, who is living a comfortable life with her father, brothers and a new stepmother. She has found a passion in being a teacher, which gets her out of the house and away from the manipulations of her father's new wife. She is prone to having mishaps and as she runs to her Uncles shop she opens the door causing a man on a ladder to fall. This is how she meets Gabriel.
Somewhat reminscent of Jane Austen, Ramona Flightner's Banished Love paints a vivid picture of turn of the century Boston as young Clarissa Sullivan struggles to rebuild her life after humiliatingly being left at the altar. Nearly two years later, just when she thinks she has found peace and stabilty teaching Boston's underprivildged youths, Clarissa's life is once more thrown into turmoil when she quite literally crashes headlong into Gabriel McLeod, a carpenter hired to build a display in her uncle's store. The attraction between them is immediate, and Clarissa's uncle, sensing an opportunity to see his favorite niece finally have another chance at the happiness, companionship and romance she deserves, nudges Gabriel and Clarissa together by hiring Gabriel to do more work and engaging Clarissa's help in overseeing his interests in the projects. Conspiring against their blossoming romance, however, are both the unexpected reappearance of Clarissa's former fiance and society's rigid class lines. Mrs. Smythe, Clariss's new stepmother, is the one person in her family who seems to feel that Cameron's wealth, breeding, family connections and putative genteel occupation as an attorney (though there seems to be some question as to whether or not he actually works) are reason enough for Clarissa to forgive his transgressions and give him another chance. And Gabriel himself seems to question whether or not a mere carpenter is worthy of someone of Clarissa's station, perhaps fearing that associating with him would cause her grandparents to look down on her more than they already do because her mother beneath herself in their view. Will Clarissa forgive Cameron for breaking her heart and allow him to woo her back? Will Gabriel and Clarissa overcome society's rigid class distinctions and find true love with each other, or will they part ways and seek matches better suited for the roles they are expected to fill?
I enjoyed the authentic dialogue and the wonderfully drawn and developed characters of Gabriel and Clarissa. Both are so authentic, genuine and human. Mrs. Smythe, in contrast, was a little uni-demensional, but as a foil and a minor character, that is hardly unexpected. The interwoven political and societal issues into the romance makes the story that much more intriguing. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series!
Set in 1900 in Boston, with a family mix of high society and fairly recent immigrants, rich, well-off, and poor and all inherent prejudices, this is basically the story of Clarissa and Gabriel and their families. The book ends with a continuance into book two. I loved the characters and hope for a wonderful ending.
A historical lesson entwined with an entertaining love story.
Political interest with the different sides of women working for the vote, bigotry encountered by immigrants as well as social class snobbery with the poor and upcoming working class as well.
Intriguing and entertaining.
Well done! Dialogue, description, and storyline well entwined. Characters brought to life and locations visualized readily, and the era was brought out by just the right description. Looking forward to the next volume.
A young teacher had bumped into a young man knocking him off a ladder. When she went to check on him they began to grow close to the regret of her step- mother who tried to get her to see the man that had left her at the alter years before. The man's Aunt had took him and brothers in when her sister passed treating them horribly, they left quite young to make their own way when she tried to ruin them at every turn. The couple were seeing each other when her Father forbade it , then his Aunt spread gossip about him to make him lose his business. A must read for those who enjoy historical western romance kindle books from at a special price and from a special author who keeps me wondering what next for the characters.
